Notes from this site

Not part of the 7-Zip manual. Written by this site; examples checked with 7-Zip 26.04.

Which version do I have?

In the File Manager open Help > About 7-Zip...; the dialog shows the version number. From a terminal, run the console program with no arguments: the banner comes first, preceded by a blank line. Example from one macOS machine:

7zz
7-Zip (z) 26.04 (arm64) : Copyright (c) 1999-2026 Igor Pavlov : 2026-10-05
 64-bit arm_v:8.5-A locale=en_US.UTF-8 Threads:12 OPEN_MAX:1048576, ASM

The text in parentheses (arm64 here) is the architecture of your build and the last date is the build date. The second line repeats the bit width and CPU features. On Windows run 7z, the console version (7z.exe in the install folder, normally C:\Program Files\7-Zip); if Windows does not find it, run it by its full path. 7zz is the official Linux and macOS console binary.

Version in a script (Linux/macOS)

7zz | grep -m1 "^7-Zip"

This prints only the banner line, as run with 7zz 26.04. Do not use head -1: the first output line is blank. This site did not run a Windows command line, so no Windows form is given; there, read the banner from the console output.

Common mistake

Downloading installers from this site: it is an unofficial mirror of the manual. Get 7-Zip only from www.7-zip.org, the button the dialog opens.
